GUMU COLLECTED MOST OF ELM DOORS IN THE NORTH OF CHINA

In recent years, the recycling of old wood in northern China has gradually gained traction amid the dual drives of cultural heritage protection and resource reutilization, with distinct scenarios for different types of wood furniture and components. As northern China boasts a long history of traditional architecture and woodworking craftsmanship, a large stock of aged wood products—from household furniture to courtyard doors and window frames—has accumulated over centuries, laying a solid foundation for the emerging recycling industry, which has also caught the attention of both cultural institutions and commercial enterprises.

When it comes to old elm wood doors and furniture, the market demand has been on a steady rise in the past decade. Elm wood, known for its sturdy texture, excellent durability and unique natural grain, is highly valued in the restoration of traditional courtyards, the creation of retro-style interior decor, and even the production of high-end custom furniture for cultural-themed hotels and museums. A well-preserved elm wood door with carved patterns, for instance, can fetch a price several times higher than ordinary new wood materials in the market. However, the acquisition of such items faces notable challenges: most intact old elm doors and furniture are scattered in remote rural homesteads, dilapidated old residential areas in small towns, or even abandoned ancestral halls, requiring professional teams to conduct on-site inspections, assess the wood’s integrity, and engage in lengthy negotiations with owners who often attach sentimental or historical value to these items, which significantly pushes up the overall acquisition cost and time investment.

For old pine wood furniture, the recycling situation is relatively different and far less promising. Pine wood, while widely used in traditional northern households due to its low cost and easy processing, is naturally soft and prone to decay, mold, and insect damage after decades of use. As a result, only pieces with intact structure, rare craftsmanship, or specific historical provenance are targeted by collectors or cultural institutions. Most ordinary old pine furniture, such as worn-out bed frames or simple cabinets, is either discarded as household waste or processed into low-value wood chips for fuel or basic board production, with extremely limited commercial recycling value in the mainstream market.

Notably, Gumu Element has made substantial investments in human resources and financial capital in northern China’s old wood acquisition, emerging as a leading player in the sector. The company has established over 10 professional scouting and collection teams across key regions including Shanxi, Hebei, and Shandong, each equipped with wood appraisal experts and local liaison officers. It has also built three standardized storage bases with moisture-proof and anti-corrosion facilities to preserve collected wood assets, and forged long-term partnerships with local village committees and cultural relics bureaus to gain access to scarce resources. These efforts have not only helped the company secure a stable supply of high-quality old wood but also effectively promoted the conservation and sustainable utilization of these precious cultural and natural assets, setting a benchmark for the industry’s development.
